A Statesville man is facing drug charges after he was found parked on the side of I-77 sleeping in his car, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell stated.
On Saturday, 40-year-old Randall Antonio Carr, of Fourth Street, was charged with felony trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to sell/deliver cocaine, possession of cocaine and maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance. He was also arrested on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and possession of drug paraphernalia, in addition to two outstanding warrants for arrests on failure to appear and violating a court order.
Carr received a $253,000 secured bond.
Campbell outlined the following chain of events in a news release:
A deputy was traveling north on I-77 when he saw a vehicle parked on the shoulder near mile marker 42 with its headlights on. The deputy pulled up behind the vehicle and stopped in an effort to assist a stranded motorist.
When the deputy walked up to the vehicle, he noticed Carr was asleep in the driver’s seat. He also observed marijuana and a partially smoked marijuana cigarette lying on the sleeping driver.
The deputy woke the driver by knocking on the window and, after speaking to Carr about the marijuana, he searched the car. Four ounces of crack cocaine and six grams of marijuana were found in the vehicle.
Carr was arrested and taken to the Iredell County Detention Center.
He has a criminal history involving larceny, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, assault, DWI, false imprisonment, breaking and entering, communicating threats and injury to property.
He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 9.
