A Mooresville man is in serious but stable condition after he was shot in what authorities termed a road rage incident Sunday.

Brian Keith Ludwick was shot in the abdomen and is at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell, in a news release, said the suspect is described as a white man with a wide age range of 20s to 50s with brown hair and slight facial hair. He was wearing sunglasses with an orange reflective tint. Campbell said the vehicle he was driving is described as a newer model gray or silver Nissan Sentra-style car.

Campbell said the incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. in the driveway of a residence in the 700 block of Cornelius Road, but it started earlier on Fern Hill Road.

He said Ludwick, accompanied by his wife and a child, were traveling on Fern Hill Road when they came upon a slow-moving car. Ludwick passed the car and then that car began tailgating Ludwick’s Ford Explorer, Campbell said.

The two vehicles continued to Perth Road and then onto Judas Road, Campbell said. While stopped at the intersection of Judas and Cornelius roads, the driver of the suspect vehicle threw a cup at the Explorer and then turned onto Cornelius Road. Campbell said the suspect vehicle pulled into a driveway in the 700 block of Cornelius Road and Ludwick, who was following, stopped and got out of his vehicle.

The driver of the suspect vehicle pulled out a gun and shot Ludwick, Campbell said.

Ludwick was taken via Iredell EMS to CMC and underwent surgery Sunday, Campbell said.

Anyone with information on the identity of the driver or who saw anything suspicious in the area is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 704-878-3100. The investigation is ongoing.
