The Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education honored several students and educators Tuesday during its monthly meeting.

The school board recognized Becky Snyder, a fifth-grade teacher at East Mooresville Intermediate School, as the 2019 D.A.R.E. Educator of the Year. Snyder was nominated for the award by Mooresville Police Officer Richard Kratz who leads the D.A.R.E. program at the district’s two intermediate schools.

D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Prevention Education and is a proactive measure taken to educate fifth-grade students about the harmful impacts drugs and alcohol can have, said MGSD Superintendent Stephen Mauney.

Kratz said Tuesday it was an “absolute privilege” to work with Snyder.

The school board also recognized Sheri Russ, a teacher assistant at Park View Elementary School, as the recipient of the “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty” award.

The “Artists of the Month” award went to third-grade students from Park View Elementary School who sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” under the direction of music teacher Katherine Lewis.

Mooresville High School senior Richard Whitfield was honored for being selected as a 2019 North Carolina Governor’s School participant.

Park View Elementary School student Katie Jenkins was honored as student of the month and led the Pledge of Allegiance to kick off Tuesday’s school board meeting.
