A Mooresville man has been arrested and charged with having sex with a girl under age 16 during the time he was a teacher at Lake Norman High School.
Jonathan Busch, 54, was arrested in Gaston County Thursday on two counts of statutory rape of a child over the age of 15 and two counts of indecent liberties with a child under the age of 16.
Iredell-Statesville Schools Superintendent Brady Johnson said Friday that the encounters did not occur at Lake Norman High School and did not involve a student from the school.
Busch resigned from his teaching position this week, Johnson said.
Gastonia police said the alleged encounters involved the same girl in 2016 between June 1 and July 31, and then between Sept. 1 and Sept. 21 of the same year.
Busch was released after posting bail Thursday. He was given a $20,000 bond.
Busch was hired by Iredell-Statesville Schools on July 31, 2003, as a social studies teacher at Lake Norman High School.
“Mr. Busch has cooperated with the authorities, however, due to the nature of these allegations, he has tendered his resignation as a teacher in Iredell-Statesville Schools,” Johnson said in a letter to parents Friday. “Though the charges against Mr. Busch are extremely serious, I can assure you that the alleged incidents did not occur on the campus of Lake Norman High School nor involved any current or former Lake Norman High School students.”
