A tasty treat could help a child’s dream come true.
Mooresville resident and the current Ms. Woman North Carolina, Tanya Topazio, is hosting Cupcake Wars, a charity event, on May 26 at Daveste Vineyards in Troutman.
“I’ve been wanting to do a charitable event for awhile, and I decided to go big or go home,” she said. “I knew I didn’t want to just do something simple; I really wanted to make it a fun event.”
After researching successful fundraising ideas, Topazio came across the concept of a Cupcake War, a baking competition where both select judges and attendees could vote on the best cupcakes. Eight local bakers will be featured.
“I hadn’t seen anything like it in Iredell County recently, so I ran with it," she said.
Tickets are $15 online and $20 at the door, and all proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish of Central and Western North Carolina, which helps grant wishes of children who have critical illnesses.
Topazio's platform as Ms. Woman North Carolina is Heels for Hearts, which spreads awareness of congenital heart defects and partners with local organizations that assist these children and families.
The price of admission will give each attendee a mini-cupcake from all participating bakers, as well as a glass of wine from Daveste Vineyards. There will also be a raffle and music at the rain-or-shine event.
Topazio said she hopes the event raises enough money to grant at least one child a wish.
“The average wish costs about $6,000, and with ticket sales alone, we should have about $2,000,” she said. “Hopefully, with the raffle, we can get close.”
