Four construction crew workers were struck, and one was killed, by an impaired driver Saturday morning in Concord, police say.

Police arrested Danyel McKenzie Middleton, who they say, drove into a construction area just before 2 a.m. and crashed into construction workers on Concord Mills Boulevard.

Police said the construction workers are employed by Cruz Brothers Concrete.

Officers said the incident happened near Entry A to the Concord Mills Mall, when a 2013 Dodge Dart was traveling eastbound on Concord Mills Boulevard and drove into an area where a road improvement project was underway.

Police said the area was properly marked with adequate lighting to designate the work zone.

Socorro Maya Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene. Another worker is in serious condition, another is in critical condition and another was treated and released from the hospital, according to law enforcement.

Middleton was charged with Felony Death by Motor Vehicle.

She was taken to the custody of the Cabarrus County Jail where she is being held on a $1,000,000 secured bond.

Her first appearance in court is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 21 at the Cabarrus County Courthouse.
