The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Iredell County until 5 p.m. today.
A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes. Listen to news partner WSOC-TV or a NOAA weather radio concerning weather conditions.
Mooresville Graded School District issued a statement saying that staff had been out driving roads in the district and had been in contact with the Mooresville Police Department.
"There is flooding throughout the district, a tornado watch for Iredell County, and forecasted heavy rains throughout the day," the district stated. "During dismissal from 2:30 until 5 p.m., we are forecasted to experience torrential rainfall. After careful consideration, we have decided to err on the side of caution and release school three hours early today."
All middle and high school students will be released at 11 a.m. All intermediate school students will be released at 11:45 a.m. and all elementary school students will be released at noon.
All evening activities are also cancelled including the Bond Information Meetings at Mooresville Middle School and South Elementary School.
"We appreciate your understanding and apologize for the inconvenience as we consider our students who drive to school, as well as our buses navigating flooded roads," the statement read.
