The back area at Trackside Restaurant in Mooresville was buzzing with excitement and chatter on Feb. 19 and it was all for one reason — to celebrate the 107th birthday of Margaret Hoffner Kennerly.
As family and friends gathered and waited to enjoy breakfast together, Margaret was busy making her rounds to visit and chat with those who had come to help her celebrate.
A balloon, flowers and birthday cards marked the honoree’s seat. She was also greeted with hugs and many requests for pictures.
The milestone event began with Rev. Dave Keck, pastor at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, where Margaret attends, welcoming each one and praying, thanking the Lord for Margaret and her life.
As the group waited to be served, Margaret’s daughter Joretta Kennerly Klepfer got the special birthday cake ready for Margaret to blow out her candles and everyone sang ‘Happy Birthday” to her.
Born on Feb. 19, 1913, Margaret was one of 11 children born to Martin Luther Hoffner and Victoria Elizabeth Cline Hoffner. Her brothers and sisters are Blanche Hoffner Lentz, Naomi Hoffner Kepley, Carl Hoffner, Leonard Hoffner, Glenn Hoffner and Bill Hoffner and the late Pauline Hoffner McBride, Ruth Hoffner Connelly, Thelma Hoffner Kennerly and Ivey Lee Hoffner. She grew up in Bear Poplar in Rowan County and moved to Mooresville around 1936.
Margaret married Mack Glenn Kennerly, who died in 1968, and the couple had two children, Joretta Kennerly Klepfer of Greensboro and Sharon Kennerly Haywood, who passed away in 1995.
