Boy Scout Troop 171 recently held two Eagle Scout Courts of Honor – Dec. 23, 2018 and Jan. 5 – to recognize seven new Eagle Scouts.

Both ceremonies were held at Williamson’s Chapel United Methodist Church, at 5 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. These young men bring the total number of Eagle Scouts in the history of the troop to 136. Troop 171, which is based in Mooresville, is sponsored by Williamson’s Chapel UMC on Brawley School Road.

The scouts honored in December were Benjamin Banzhof, Daniel Papadopoulos, Andrew Montambo and Kit Stuckey. Banzhof, Montambo and Stuckey are seniors at Lake Norman High School, and Papadopoulos is a senior at South Iredell High School.

Those honored in January were Barrett Childs, Jack Greenberg and John Driver. Childs and Greenberg are graduates of Lake Norman High School, and Driver is a junior at South Iredell High School.

To become an Eagle Scout, each had to perform an extensive service project that the scout plans, organizes, leads and manages, and the project must benefit a segment of the community.

The projects were: Banzhof built and installed turtle basking platforms on Lake Norman; Papadoupoulos constructed three flag collection boxes for retired U.S. flags in downtown Mooresville; Montambo constructed three benches and laid brick pavers to create a memorial garden for the columbarium in the cemetery at Williamson’s Chapel UMC; Stuckey built benches at the beach area at Lake Norman State Park in Troutman; Childs built three storage units for the physical education class and a take a book/leave a book library at Lake Norman Elementary School in Mooresville; Greenberg built book shelves for the kindergarten reading center at Woodland Heights Elementary School in Mooresville; and Driver built picnic tables and flower beds at Mount Mourne Middle School in Mooresville.

In a release, it noted that the Eagle Scout Award is the highest attainable rank in Boy Scouting and requires a lengthy review process. Only four percent of scouts attain this rank mostly because the requirements necessary to achieve Eagle Scout takes years to fulfill.
