Drowning

A look at Lake Norman on Saturday.

A man drowned on Lake Norman Saturday afternoon after jumping off a pontoon boat, said Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Brian Fink.

Jeffery Wayne Cooper Jr., of Windsor, North Carolina, was in his early 30s, according to Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell.

Fink said the man’s body was recovered just before 6 p.m.

The man was one of at least 12 people on a pontoon boat near Lake Norman State Park Saturday afternoon, Fink said. Shortly after 2 p.m., the man jumped from the boat to go swimming and never resurfaced.

Authorities were notified and personnel from Troutman, Shepherds, Mooresville and Sherrills Ford fire departments as well as Iredell and North Iredell rescue squads responded to the area of Loblolly Drive, off State Park Road, to begin a search for the missing swimmer. The sheriff’s office and N.C. Wildlife also responded.

Fink said the man’s body was located about 50 yards from where he was last seen. The body was located in a portion of the lake that is 59 feet deep, Fink said.
