Patrons gathered for the first ever Art of the Wild opening reception sponsored by Mooresville Arts and Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists.

The event was designed to bring environmental issues together with artwork in order to help the public become more conscious about environmental preservation.

“The goal of the Art of the Wild Event is to bring the realms of the arts and environmental conservation together through a wildlife-themed art exhibit, to bring awareness to both causes,” said Billy Wilson, chairman of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and past president of Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists. “Both Mooresville Arts and the Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists are thriving nonprofit organizations that serve, and are greatly supported by, the local community.”

The opening reception featured 39 unique pieces of artwork that included paintings, woodwork and pottery. Some of the artwork is being donated while other pieces were s old through a silent auction.

“Thirty-nine pieces of artwork are on display and for sale; artwork includes paintings, woodwork, pottery and more,” Mooresville Arts President Jessica Dehart said. “Artwork subject matter includes native flora and fauna, including raptors, songbirds, fish and other NC wildlife. Some artwork in the exhibit is for sale (benefiting local artists) and most is for sale, via silent auction, as donations from local artists to fundraise for the two organizations.”

Participating artists were required to submit up to two art pieces, with one piece contributing to the fundraiser, while the other piece could either be sold or donated.

“Artists could enter up to two pieces and at least one had to be donated to the fundraiser; the other piece could be for sale or designated as a donation as well,” DeHart said.

The public can visit the gallery and bid on the artwork through Thursday. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can contact Mooresville Arts for more information at 704-663-6661.
