A Pennsylania man died after an RV caught fire at a campground in Statesville early Tuesday morning, Assistant Iredell Fire Marshal Josh Levan said.

William Vacek, 32, of Mifflintown, Pennsylvania was identified by medical examiners, said Iredell County Sheriff's Office Major Andy Poteat.

He added the preliminary cause of death appears to be smoke inhalation.

At 12:42 a.m. Tuesday, a 911 call was made reporting a fire in the 200 block of Log Drive at the Real McCoy Campground in Statesville, Levan said. He said it appears to have been made shortly after the fire began.

A newer model fifth-wheel tow-behind RV was the source of the blaze, Levan said. The fire was contained in less than 15 minutes and Levan said the vehicle damage was significant.

“ It appears (the fire) originated in the kitchen area of the camper,” he said.

The cause of the fire has been ruled as undetermined and there is an ongoing investigation, Levan said. As of Wednesday, authoriities do not suspect malicious intent.

It’s still under investigation, but there’s no indication of foul play,” Maj. Poteat said.

It is not known if the vehicle was insured.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and Iredell County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation. Levan explained it is office policy to involve the SBI any time there is a fire-related death.
