That’s all the immediate area-based high school volleyball teams could ask with the release this week by the N.C. High School Athletic Association of the postseason brackets.
Two of them with local ties wound up getting their wish.
Lake Norman and Pine Lake Prep will each help form the initial fields for opening-round participation in their respective statewide classes in the state’s volleyball playoffs that are slated to get underway over the weekend.
Lake Norman’s Wildcats, representatives of their I-Meck Conference, will be competing within the 4A class cast.
Pine Lake’s Pride, out of their PAC-7 Conference, will be a part of the 1A class crowd.
Both were on track to make their postseason debuts late Saturday. Results from those affairs were posted too late to be included in this edition.
The NCHSAA finalized the four brackets for official release late Thursday.
Lake Norman, which recently made it as far as the semifinal round of the I-Meck postseason volleyball tournament, landed the 4A West Region’s No. 15 seed for first-round playoff purposes. The Wildcats were paired up against No. 18 seed Lumberton that served to also reward Lake Norman with a first-round appearance on their home court.
Throughout the volleyball playoffs leading up to the state championship finals scheduled to take place next month, all of the best-of-five-games matches will be held on the host site of the higher-seeded team.
In the case of Pine Lake, it has been shouldered with the No. 20 seeded status within its 1A class West Region entering the second-season stage. The Pride matched up against No. 13 seed Gray Stone Day in its first-round affair.
A win by Lake Norman will advance it into the second-round scheduled to take place no later than Tuesday to take on No. 2 seeded Northwest Guilford club that received a first-round bye.
As for Pine Lake, a round-one upset win by the Pride would propel them into a round-two meeting with the winner of the first-round bout between No. 4 seed Alleghany and No. 29 seed East Wilkes.
The NCHSAA has finalized and released the playoff brackets for the state’s 2019 Volleyball Championships. The tournament will have four classifications of play with six playoff rounds each. The 4A bracket will field 48 teams with the 1A, 2A and 3A brackets fielding 64 teams each.
Play began this weekend with second round play scheduled Tuesday; the third round is slated for Oct. 31, fourth round games Nov. 2 and the Regional Finals scheduled to be held on Nov. 5.
The state championship matches will be contested on Nov. 9 in Fayetteville at Fayetteville State University’s Capel Arena. Play is scheduled to begin at noon.
Tickets to the championships are $10 at the door, or digital tickets can be purchased in advance through the NCHSAA’s partnership with GoFan.
