MOORESVILLE Laura Smith Little, 97, A lifetime resident of Mooresville, died Wednesday, June 26, 2019, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. She was a resident of Serenity House at the time of her death. She was born in Mooresville, Sept. 23, 1921, the first born child of the late Floyd Brem and Julia Overcash Smith. She graduated from Mooresville Central High School in 1937 and attended Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory in 1938, receiving a one year commercial business certificate. She began working for the Town of Mooresville in the water department located on Broad Street. More employment opportunities followed at Mooresville Mills in the human resources department, Mooresville Telephone Company in customer service, and she worked for her brother, Clarence, who owned Wise Florist in downtown Mooresville. Laura was a life-long member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. In her earlier years she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. In her later years she served on the committee that provided funeral meals for the church members. She continued her support of St. Marks until her death. Laura loved to mingle and talk to people and she never met a stranger. She had a wonderful and friendly personality and was a joy to know. She always put her family ahead of her own needs and wants. In her earlier years she loved to do needle work including needle point and cross stitch. She loved to work crossword puzzles. Her mind was keen until her death. Some of her fondest memories were the years she traveled abroad and in the United States with her childhood and lifelong friend, Mary Todd of Columbia S.C. Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Little; and brothers, Brem, Albert, Clarence and Harry Smith. She is survived by her sons, Robert B. Little and wife, Deborah, of Mooresville, Richard W. Little and wife, Risa, of Kannapolis; grandsons, Ryan Little and wife, Katherine, of Concord, Rex Little and wife, Jennifer of Davidson; four great-grandchildren, Asher, Micah, Gideon and Norah; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a wonderful and special niece, Nancy Little Hucks and husband, Cliff, and Nancy's daughter, Ashley Willard and husband, Joseph, and son Blaine. Nancy treated Laura as though she was her own mother. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 30, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dave Keck officiating. The family will receive friends in St. Mark's Family Life Center following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 454 Fieldstone Rd., Mooresville, NC 28115; or Serenity House, 110 Centre Church Rd., Mooresville, NC 28117.
