If you ask Pine Lake Prep Boys Tennis head coach Paul Ebenhoeh, Tyler Ramanata is one of the most composed, savvy and consistent players in teen tennis.
The freshman’s performance in 2019 did nothing but reinforce Ebenhoeh’s sentiment.
After an undefeated regular season and a run to the 1A individual semifinals, Ramanata is the 2019 Record & Landmark’s All-County Boys Tennis Player of the Year.
“It’s a good honor,” Ramanata said. “I liked being on the team this year. It’s my first year and honestly I thought it was going to be ok, but my teammates brought me up and it was really fun to play with that group of guys.”
Playing in the number one singles spot for the Pride, Ramanata did not lose a single set during team play in 2019. He finished the team season with a game record of 144-16 and an overall record of 12-0.
The freshman was named all-conference, all-region, all-state and all-conference player of the year as a result.
Being a freshman and diving right in to the number one spot in singles for Pine Lake may have led to some shaky moments for most players, but Ramanata has been playing tennis from a young age. He attributes a lot of his success this year to the hard work and determination he’s displayed since he began playing.
“I’ve been playing since I was 6,” he said. “I feel like that experience gave me the ability to play a lot better.”
But tennis is not the only place Ramanata excels. According to his coach, his versatility and commitment continues outside the courts.
“He (Tyler) is a very dedicated player devoting time to team practices and pro clinics,” Ebenhoenh said. “And He is one of the top students in his academic class at PLP.”
Luckily for Ebenhoeh and PLP, the freshman still has three years left to showcase his talent for the Pride. Ramanata has a few goals in mind for the next three years.
“Hopefully next year, we can make it to the state championship team-wise,” Ramanata said. “Hopefully in individuals I can make it a little farther than I did this year and make it to the finals.”
