The head volleyball coach at Wake Forest University, William Ferguson, has been been placed on administrative leave in response to a college admissions bribery case unsealed Tuesday in federal court.
Ferguson is one of 12 named defendants who are either collegiate coaches or involved with private athletics groups.
Wake Forest said in a statement that "it is aware of the allegations regarding head volleyball coach Bill Ferguson. The university has retained outside legal counsel to look into this matter. "
Randi Smart has been named as interim coach, effective immediately.
The university said it would have no further comment. It did not respond when asked if Ferguson has been arrested and how many students or volleyball team members are connected to the bribery cases.
According to a coaching biography of Ferguson on the Wake Forest website, he had been head coach since June 4, 2016, until today. He previously coached at the University of Southern California from 2005 to 2015, another university cited in the scandal.
