Lake Norman's Nathan Dugan prepares to wrestle in the 195-pound, 4A state championship match Saturday.

A winner by knockout.

Though a term not normally associated with wrestling, it’s also one that definitely fits when it comes to Lake Norman’s Nathan Dugan.

This past week, Dugan, a two-time individual weight class N.C. High School Athletic Association champion, was the recipient of this year’s highest honor that can be bestowed upon a state high school level wrestler.

Dugan has been selected as North Carolina’s winner of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award.

The distinction recognizes and celebrates the nation’s most outstanding high school senior male wrestlers from each state for their excellence in the sport as well as scholastic achievement, citizenship and community service.

Dugan captured the state’s 4A class individual weight class title belt within his 195-pound class and ended with a 55-4 overall season. He was also selected as the state meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

As a junior, Dugan won the state’s 182-pound class solo crown.

Dugan has accepted a combination athletic/academic scholarship to attend Princeton University.
