Hunted by Hough High’s Huskies defenders, Mooresville’s Keshaun Black attempts to avoid the hot pursuit during a carry for the Blue Devils in Friday night’s I-Meck Conference contest at Coach Joe Popp Stadium.

Bigger definitely wasn’t better in the eyes of Mooresville’s football team Friday night.

All five of the touchdowns allowed by the Blue Devils came on scoring plays covering at least 20 yards apiece, with two of them being dialed in from midfield or beyond. The Devils never managed to fully recover from the long-distance body blows to drop a 38-21 decision to I-Meck Conference foe Hough High.

The Devils (3-3 for the season overall and 1-1 within I-Meck play) marred their first appearance back on their home Coach Joe Popp Stadium site in more than a month by allowing Hough’s Huskies (3-3 and 2-0, respectively) to wing their way to nearly 350 yards via the passing attack that anchored the winning charge.

Mooresville surrendered TD-scoring pass plays covering, in order, 79, 26, 21 and 50 yards, respectively, while also being hit by a 32-yard rushing score for the highest points-total surrendered by the defense in the course of a single game this season.

In their own defense, the Devils tried to counter the Huskies’ charge that two times found them trimming their deficit to a single touchdown.

MHS senior quarterback Hunter DeBerardino accounted for nearly all of his right at 150 yards through the air on his trio of scoring aerial completions.

DeBerardino connected with target tight end Ryan Jackson on a 52-yard TD pass in the second quarter, coupled with placekicker Isaac Riffle’s point-after kick, at the time cut the game’s margin to 13-7.

Just inside the midway mark of third period play, DeBerardino hooked up with a wide-open Jackson on a second scoring strike this time checking in from 52 yards out. Again accompanied by Riffle’s PAT boot, Mooresville trimmed the difference to 23-14.

Then, during the final phase of fourth, DeBerardino did it again by spotting wide receiver Keshaun Black behind his Hough High defender for a 40-yard scoring pass play. Riffle’s third successful point-after kick closed out the scoring for the Devils.

Mooresville never held the lead, spotting Hough a 13-0 lead halfway through the second period before facing a 16-7 deficit at the intermission break. The Devils stared at their largest shortcoming, at 23-7, less than two minutes into the third period prior to trimming the margin back to single digits with the final period left to play.

The Devils’ third touchdown came in between allowing of two more matching fourth-period blows by Hough, whose Huskies then closed out the points production on a safety.

With Mooresville’s DeBerardino using his arm to account for the bulk of the offensive advancement, Black captained the receiving corps in yardage gained with his total of 78 yards and the score. Both of receiver Jackson’s catches were good for a TD.
