Among the best, Mooresville’s Luke Goodin emerges as one of a trio of Blue Devils to fashion an undefeated record during their appearance in the annual Bob Mauldin Mat News Wrestling Classic.

Spreading the News.

Mooresville High School’s wrestling team surfaced as one of the most successful of all the entries in the annual Bob Mauldin Mat News Wrestling Classic.

Among the near 20 teams in attendance at Piedmont High School, the Blue Devils chalked up wins in all but one of their five dual-team matches during the day to fashion one of the best team record of all others in the field.

The Devils logged in with their wins by scores of 65-9 over Metrolina Christian Academy, 46-2 over crowd favorite Piedmont, 60-3 against Porter Ridge and 66-11 opposite Charlotte Providence. Only a 42-27 defeat dropped against Hillcrest High prevented Mooresville from making a clean sweep of all its tabled appearances.

Some select members of the team’s wrestling line-up managed to exceed even the team’s showing.

The Devils’ Isaac Shaw at 152 pounds, Luke Goodin at both the 160-pound and 170-pound classes, and Austyn Barton at 285 pounds/heavyweight all emerged with respective wins in tow during each of their total of five on-the-mat appearances.

Several others came close to matching that perfect effort.

Greg Merriman at 106 pounds, Samson Sokolski at 120 pounds, Jake Emmert at 132 pounds, Dilyn Roudebush at both 170-pounds and 182 pounds, and Ray Watson at 220 pounds secured wins in four of their five outings.

Others with multiple weight class wins included Davis Freeze at 113 pounds, Weston Weddington at 145 pounds, Desmond Jackson at 160 pounds, Alex Mercer-Johnson at 182 pounds, and Blaise Mann at 195 pounds.

Mooresville returns to the mat when teaming up with both Myers Park and Providence for a three-team match Wednesday night.
