Highlighted by North Iredell’s Jonna Strange, several Iredell County athletes qualified for this week’s state championship meets by virtue of their performances Saturday.
Strange won the girls’ 1,600 and 3,200 meter championships during the 3A West regional in Hendersonville. The junior recorded times of 5 minutes, 10 seconds and 10:54.20, respectively. She finished more than 25 seconds ahead of the 3,200 runner-up.
The South Iredell boys 4x200-meter relay finished fourth in the 3A West regional with a time of 1:32.90.
West Iredell’s Chandon Smith and Lariyah Clark had a good day in the 2A Midwest regional.
Smith claimed the boys’ 300-meter hurdles title with a time of 40.28 seconds. He finished third in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 22.76 seconds.
Clark garnered a runner-up finish in the girls’ triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 9.75 inches. She was third in the long jump, leaping 16-06.25.
West Iredell’s Ryan Tenor placed third in the boys’ triple jump with a distance of 42-09.
State qualifiers from the 4A West regional included athletes from Lake Norman and Mooresville. They were as follows:
Mooresville’s Keshaun Black (fourth in 100 dash, 10.93 seconds), Jake Trantham (fourth in 400 dash, 50.24), Damien Gonzalez (third in 1600 run, 4:31.29; fourth in 3200 run, 10:12.95), Reggie Spratling (runner-up in shot put, 48-11.75), D’nahjah Harrell (third in girls’ high jump, 5-02), Rebecca Karriker (champion in girls’ pole vault, 9-06) and Payton Tucker (third in girls’ pole vault, 9-00).
Lake Norman’s Maddie Huecker (champion in 3200 run, 11:32.19; runner-up in 1600 run, 5:13.52) and Spencer Evans (first in pole vault, 14-00).
