As impressions go, one Mooresville youth football player left a lasting one.
It’s one that has earned him a coveted invitation to attend one of the top prep-level all-star camps in the country.
Mooresville’s Chris Murrell has secured his spot in the huddle and plans to attend the Football University Top Gun All-Star Camp that will take place in Ohio later this month.
Murrell will be in the casting call for the three-day event on tap to take place at Dubin Jerome High School in Dublin, Ohio from July 20-22.
Just being named to participate in the FBU Top Gun affair means that players so honored are considered to be among the best at their respective positions.
Murrell, a rising freshman at Mooresville Senior High, was invited to the all-star camp based on his performance as a quarterback at the FBU Regional Camp held earlier this summer in Charlotte. He will join more than 1,600 of the nation’s top athletes at their respective positions and will receive the distinction of training with current and former National Football league coaches and players.
Already well-known in local circles for his ability in the sport of lacrosse, the 5-foot-6 and 134-pound Murrell also displayed his knack for football as well during the regional FBU event. He will be among the some 800 middle school-level players in attendance.
The Top Gun All-Star Camp represents the culmination of Football University’s 24-camp nationwide season gathering the most elite performers from across the country and allowing them to compete and display their various abilities together on one stage.
FBU has an alumni list that includes some of the top college football recruits and players in the United States.
Headlining the Top Gun Showcase coaching staff are quarterbacks coach Jeff Rutledge, former quarterback coach of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals; running back coach Robert Edwards; offensive line coach Jim McNally; defensive back coach Ray Buchanan; and wide receivers coach Charlie Collins.
FBU Top Gun is designed to give elite middle school and high school student-athletes premier instruction and boasts of having trained some of the nation’s top players. Among those who have previously attended the camp are such current NFL players as Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Eli Manning and Tony Romo.
