Solid from the start.

The Mooresville Spinners, reigning Southern Collegiate Baseball League postseason tournament champions, shot off to a strong showing to open their season by collecting consecutive homefield victories via vastly different methods.

The Spinners, in their sixth season overall and beginning their second as SCBL members, made the most of what was given to edge their way past the High Point Hi-Tom Locos, 2-1, a night before unloading the lumber to pound their way past the fellow in-house entry Race City Bootleggers, 12-2, to make a thorough success of the Memorial Day holiday schedule.

Mooresville takes a short breather from its ambitious schedule before returning to the field this week owning the fast 2-0 start.

At home to make their regular-season debut in front of a ticket-sales headcount announced at approaching some 900 fans at the team’s home Moor Park facility, back-to-back batters being hit by pitches with the bases loaded in the bottom the fifth, plated two runs the Spinners needed to squeeze their way past the Locos, 2-1.

Play in the opener was delayed by nearly a half-hour in the seventh inning for lightning that came complete with a rain shower to settle the dust and slightly drop the game temperature that hovered well into the 90s at the 7:30 p.m. start.

Out of the bullpen, Concord resident Chris Monteleone – also a product of Belmont Abbey College – completed the pitching duties by setting down the Locos side in the last of the ninth to pocket the save. Starting pitcher Ethan Lauchart (Sissonville, West Virginia., and West Virginia State University) was followed to the mound by Ty Lilly (Denver, Erskine College), Austin Duckett (Gaffney, South Carolina, Erskine), and Christian Huggins (Mount Holly, Queens University)

At the plate, Dawson Painter (Trinity, UNC-Pembroke) captained the charge with his four hits from the third place position in the batting order.

Opposite the Bootleggers, operating as an independent-level entry as well as a feeder outfit for the Spinners, no such drama was required as the Spinners cruised to the 12-2 decision.

Starting pitcher Nick Roser (Mount Holly, Wake Tech) warranted the starting pitching assignment and was rewarded with the win.

Offensively, Seth McCauley (Huntersville, Western Carolina University) slugged a grand-slam home run and also accounted for a double to power the assault. Logan Welch (Winston Salem, Mount Olive College) also swatted a homer among his two hits.

Mooresville will make its first official SCBL appearance when hosting the Lake Norman Copperheads Wednesday night. The Spinners draw their season’s opening four-game homestand to a close when welcoming to Moor Park the league member Charlotte Crushers Thursday. First-pitch time for both is tentatively set for 7 p.m.
