Grant Tilley homered and Chris Haggard drove in three runs as the Lake Norman Copperheads defeated the Statesville Owls 8-2 in Wednesday night's Southern Collegiate Baseball League game at West Iredell High School.
The Copperheads plated two runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead 3-1 and led 6-1 after the top of the sixth. They weren't threatened from there.
Haggard and Austin Treadway each produced three hits for Lake Norman, and Tilley had two for the Copperheads, who outhit the Owls 14-11.
Derek Dyson took the loss on the mound. He worked five innings, allowing four runs--three earned--on seven hits. The right-hander from Pfeiffer struck out three.
The loss spoiled a great night at the plate for Kelsey Weems (Rockingham C.C.). He belted two solo home runs and finished 3 for 4 at the dish.
Grayson Chapman (UNC Greensboro/Alexander Central H.S.) was also 3 for 4 for Statesville, which slipped to 15-16 on the season.
Johnny Hummel (Erskine) supplied two hits for the Owls, and R.J. Conner (Catawba Valley C.C./Statesville H.S.) and Beau Thompson (Newberry) each contributed a double.
Statesville was back at home Thursday night against the Charlotte Crushers. Results of that game were not available in time for this edition.
