TROUTMAN—Cullen Smith scored four first half touchdowns, leading South Iredell (5-6, 3-2) to a 51-21 win Friday night over Carson (2-9, 1-4), likely securing a playoff berth in the process.
Taking advantage of numerous Carson mistakes in the first quarter, Smith scored rushing touchdowns on the first two drives of the game and added two of his three passing touchdowns in the first half for a Vikings team in search of their 15th consecutive playoff appearance.

The two-way player added two interceptions from the safety position in an all-around performance for the ages. Smith completed 10 of 12 passes for 221 yards and 3 TDs. He added 96 yards and 2 TDs on the ground.
Darius Smyre had a rushing touchdown and was on the receiving end of a 69-yard touchdown pass from Smith that gave the Vikings a 41-0 lead late in the second quarter. Smith and Smyre were just two of a number of seniors that had their handprints all over the Vikings senior night win.
South Iredell head coach Scott Miller said this year’s seniors mean a lot to the program.
“They mean a lot to us,” Miller said. “We’ve been fortunate, we haven’t lost a senior night since we took over 10 years ago. We worked all week and wanted to get all the seniors in before anyone else. It means a lot because by winning for them it also means hopefully a playoff berth.”
Carson would find the pay dirt just before the half but gave South Iredell just enough time to get in position for a Cody Hazleton 38-yard field goal to give the Vikings a 44-7 halftime lead.
The two teams traded scores in the second half as South Iredell coasted to the win.
With the win, South Iredell secured a third-place finish in the North Piedmont Conference, which should be good enough to sneak into the playoffs.
If given a berth, the Vikings would start the playoffs on the road, likely playing a top 3 seed in the 3AA bracket.
Miller said for now it’s just a waiting game.
“I officiate youth football on Saturdays and I will be checking my phone the whole time hoping we get in (the playoffs),” Miller said. “We don’t care if we play the best team in the state. We just want to get in. If we do, we are happy and if we don’t, we made our bed and we have to lay in it.”
