The Mooresville Spinners made sure they had something to show for the season’s first full phase of play in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League ranks.
Engaging in consecutive-night appearances against fellow SCBL foes, the Spinners salvaged a split after following up a 10-7 defeat dropped at the hands of the Lake Norman Copperheads by racking up a 10-4 decision over the Charlotte Crushers.
The split put Mooresville at the 3-1 level for the season while placing their in-SCBL ledger to the 1-1 mark heading back into action.
Facing off against the Charlotte Crushers in the second of the back-to-back affairs, the Spinners broke on top in the home half of the first inning – overcoming a 1-0 deficit in the process – and soared out to as much as a nine-run command before the final 10-4 verdict.
Starting pitcher Bryson Linkous (Mt. Holly, Catawba College) collected the win with his five full innings of duty. Out of the bullpen, relievers Joe Harrison (Salisbury, Belmont Abbey College), Reese Robinson (Dayton, Ohio, Wake Forest University), Austin Duckett (Gaffney, South Carolina, Erskine College), Christian Huggins (Mt. Holly, Queens University) and Nash Jamison (Mt. Holly, Florence Darlington Tech) all also garnered some personal mound time as well. Collectively, the crew allowed the four runs on six hits while striking out 10 total.
At the plate, J. P. Perez (Mooresville, UNC-Asheville) finished only a triple shy of hitting for the cycle by drilling a home run, a double and a single as part of a three-hit night. Tyler Leek (Hayesville, Appalachian State), Tyler McPeak (Denver, Campbell University) and Jake Whitcomb (Harrisburg, UNC Charlotte) all piped in with a pair of base hits each. Logan Welch (Winston Salem, Mount Olive College), Eric Rigsby (Jonesboro, Tennessee, Carson Newman College) and Darien Farley (Denver, Erskine College) each chimed in with a single base knock as well.
A night earlier and opposite the Lake Norman Copperheads in the SCBL debut for both, an early hole proved to be too deep for the Spinners to escape in being dealt the 10-7 loss - their first setback of the season.
Starting pitcher Perez was shouldered with the loss, followed to the mound by relievers Chris Monteleone (Concord, Belmont Abbey), Tim Townsend (Charlotte, College of Charleston), Huggins and Ty Lilly (Denver, Erskine College). Combined, the crew allowed the 10 runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts.
Offensively, the twosome of Welch and Seth McAulay (Huntersville, Western Carolina University) each drilled a home run, while Rigsby joined McAulay in poking out a team high two hits each. McPeak, Dawson Painter (Trinity, UNC Pembroke) and Nick Solomita (Denver, UNC Greensboro) added a base rap each to the attack
Mooresville headed back into play to take on the Lenoir Oilers to draw the May segment of the season’s schedule to a close before popping the cork on June with a visit from the fellow in-county SCBL rival Statesville Owls. Results from both games were posted too late to be included in this edition.
